MTN Zambia and WWF Launch PachiPanda Challenge for Green Startups

MTN Zambia Foundation and WWF Zambia have launched the fifth edition of the PachiPanda Innovation Challenge, calling on young Zambians and early-stage businesses to develop solutions for Zambia’s environmental and economic challenges.

Launched on September 14, 2026, under the theme “Nature Meets Innovation: Unlocking Zambia’s Green Economy,” the programme targets Zambian youth aged 18 to 35, including individuals, teams and youth-led SMEs with early-stage or existing solutions. Applications close on October 16.

The challenge focuses on four areas: clean energy, water, food systems and the circular economy. Organisers are looking for practical solutions that can address issues such as renewable energy access, food security, waste management, recycling and sustainable use of natural resources.

Startups can access training and funding

Selected participants will go through a programme that combines incubation, mentorship and business development support. Each team must nominate one representative who can commit to a two-week intensive training programme focused on strengthening the business and refining its solution.

Jacaranda Hub is serving as the implementing partner for the 2026 Zambia edition, supporting outreach, training, mentorship and the national pitch process. The programme is also supported by Huawei alongside MTN Zambia Foundation and WWF Zambia.

The financial prizes are US$5,000 for first place, US$3,000 for second place and US$2,000 for third place. Beyond the prize money, the top 10 teams will receive continued support aimed at helping them become investment-ready and connect with further opportunities.

Winners can compete at African level

PachiPanda started in Zambia in 2022 and has since expanded into a broader African programme. National winners can progress to the continental PachiPanda Challenge, where they compete with innovators from other African markets for additional funding, training and exposure.

The Zambia programme has previously supported innovators working in areas including agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, conservation and technology. MTN Zambia Foundation says past participants have used the programme to develop their ideas, build businesses and access new networks and partnerships.

The 2026 programme will announce its semi-finalists on October 23, followed by virtual incubation from October 26 to November 27. Sprint week is scheduled for November 30 to December 3, with the national pitch day taking place on December 3.
