The Nyanzaga Gold Project, situated in northwestern Tanzania within the Lake Victoria Goldfields, stands out as one of East Africa’s most promising gold ventures. Australian mining company Perseus Mining acquired and developed the project after taking over OreCorp Limited in 2024. Moreover, positioned just 30 kilometers northeast of Barrick Gold’s Bulyanhulu mine, Nyanzaga strengthens Tanzania’s mining sector, which remains a critical driver of the country’s economy.

Mining and Production Plans

Nyanzaga combines open-pit and underground mining methods and targets an annual processing rate of approximately four million tonnes. Over its projected 11-year lifespan, the mine will produce more than two million ounces of gold, averaging over 200,000 ounces per year. Consequently, this level of production establishes Nyanzaga as a major contributor to regional gold output and provides a substantial source of revenue for the Tanzanian government.

Government Revenue and Economic Impact

The Tanzanian government holds a 20% non-contributing interest in the project, giving it a direct share of profits. Furthermore, mining continues to contribute significantly to Tanzania’s GDP and foreign exchange earnings. In fact, the government collects considerable revenue from gold exports, which, in turn, supports national development initiatives and infrastructure projects.

Local Community Benefits

Perseus Mining actively delivers tangible benefits to local communities. For instance, the company prioritizes employment opportunities for residents and provides transportation services to facilitate access to the mine. In addition, investments in social infrastructure including housing, schools, and healthcare facilities enhance local quality of life. Skills-based training programs further strengthen local capacity and ensure sustainable community benefits over the long term.

Environmental and Social Responsibility

Environmental stewardship remains central to the project. Nyanzaga completed an extensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and implemented an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to minimize ecological and social impacts. These measures, therefore, balance economic growth with sustainable practices and community well-being.

Economic and Social Significance

As a major development in Tanzania’s mining sector, the Nyanzaga Gold Project drives both economic and social growth. With first production expected in early 2027, the Tanzanian economy and local communities will benefit from revenue generation, employment opportunities, and infrastructure improvements. Nyanzaga sets an example of responsible and impactful mining in the region.
