Meta introduced the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP on September 15. The tool connects AI coding assistants, including Claude, Cursor, Codex and ChatGPT, directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform, allowing developers to manage parts of the setup process through a conversation with an AI agent.

AI takes over setup tasks

Setting up WhatsApp Business messaging has traditionally required developers to move between Meta's Developer Console, Business Manager, API documentation and coding tools.

The new system allows an AI agent to handle several of those steps. It can create a WhatsApp Business account, add and verify a phone number, register it for Cloud API access and check whether the business has completed required terms and verification steps.

Developers can also ask the agent to create a WhatsApp message template from a description or make changes to an existing one. The tools can test messages and webhooks, while also helping identify problems with areas such as payment methods and business verification.

Developers can troubleshoot through AI

Meta has also made its Social Technologies MCP available to support the process. It can help AI agents locate API endpoints, search Meta's documentation and troubleshoot technical errors while developers configure their WhatsApp integrations.

For developers, that means fewer manual steps during onboarding and testing. Instead of searching through different Meta tools to find a setting or fix an integration problem, they can describe the task to an AI agent and let it handle supported actions.

What it means for African startups

For African startups building fintech, e-commerce, delivery and customer-service products, the update reduces some of the technical work involved in connecting their services to WhatsApp Business.

WhatsApp is already widely used by African small businesses to communicate with customers, take orders and manage sales. Startups building tools around the platform still need to navigate API setup, account verification, message templates and testing before launching their services.

Meta's new tools allow AI agents to handle several of these tasks, giving smaller engineering teams a more direct way to configure and test WhatsApp integrations.

The update is particularly relevant to startups developing WhatsApp commerce, payments, customer support and business automation products. Less time spent on repetitive configuration allows development teams to focus more on the product itself and the services they are building for businesses.
