Held on 16 October at The Social House in Lavington, Nairobi, the pitchathon marked the launch of a strategic partnership between Meta and the Nairobi-based accelerator. The programme brought together developers working on AI applications for healthcare, education, retail, legal services and financial compliance.

Beyond the funding, the winning teams will receive Meta advertising credits and invitations to present their solutions at the company's Regional AI Summit in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 24 November 2026.

The competition focused on practical applications of AI, including improving access to healthcare, supporting local-language communication, helping businesses manage operations and strengthening tax compliance.

Healthcare and Education Lead the Cohort

Healthcare and education account for six of the 10 participating startups, with solutions ranging from AI-assisted medical reporting to school management and communication tools for children with disabilities.

Neural Labs Africa is developing NeuralSight, a tele-radiology and AI diagnostic reporting platform designed to support medical imaging services. Solivia Data is building AfyaEdge, which combines solar power with offline triage hubs to extend access to healthcare services in areas with limited connectivity or electricity.

O.C.A. is developing offline claims-auditing software focused on insurance and Social Health Authority compliance. Its platform targets administrative processes that require accurate claims assessment and regulatory checks.

In education, Jackfruit Network is building data-driven advisory tools for low-fee private schools. The platform aims to support school decision-making through data analysis.

Utter Africa is developing a Kiswahili-first augmentative and alternative communication platform for nonverbal children with autism spectrum disorder. The solution focuses on helping children communicate using technology designed around a local language.

Me-Nasoma uses text-to-speech technology to convert content into local Kenyan languages, making written information accessible through spoken output.

Funding and Access to Meta's AI Network

The pitchathon gives the selected startups an opportunity to present their products to judges while competing for funding and access to Meta's wider AI ecosystem.

The $5,000 awards are equity-free, meaning the winning teams will not have to surrender company ownership in exchange for the funding. Advertising credits could also help them promote their products, while the Istanbul summit offers an opportunity to present their solutions to a wider regional audience.

The partnership between Meta and This Is Digital centres on supporting developers building AI applications for local markets. The participating startups are applying the technology to specific operational needs, from medical reporting and insurance claims to school administration and communication support. Two teams will receive the cash awards, but all 10 startups form part of the inaugural cohort.
