Chevron’s move into Guinea-Bissau’s offshore territory marks a defining step for the small West African nation. The entry places the country firmly within the rapidly developing MSGBC Basin a stretch of coastline linking Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea that is fast becoming one of Africa’s most dynamic energy frontiers.

Entry into Blocks 5B and 6B

The U.S. energy company confirmed that it has obtained exploration rights for the Carapau and Peixe Espada blocks. Under the new agreement, Chevron’s local subsidiary will control 90% of the assets, while the national oil company, Petroguin, holds the remaining 10%. With regulatory clearance already secured, the arrangement underscores Guinea-Bissau’s determination to attract large-scale and sustainable foreign investment.

Béatrice Bienvenu, Chevron’s Country Manager for West Africa, stated that the collaboration strengthens the company’s ongoing effort to expand into underexplored basins and build stronger ties with host countries. The addition of Guinea-Bissau extends Chevron’s portfolio, which already includes new projects in Namibia, Peru, and Uruguay, as well as long-standing operations in Angola and Nigeria.

Momentum in Africa’s Offshore Drive

Chevron’s move comes amid renewed energy exploration across Africa’s offshore territories. Major producers are intensifying drilling efforts as demand for new reserves rises. In Equatorial Guinea, Chevron recently completed a $690 million gas development at the Aseng field, while in Namibia, it leads exploration in two frontier basins attracting growing investor interest.

Although Chevron has not yet announced a production timeline, early geological data suggests encouraging potential. According to Ecofin Agency, studies by Australia’s Far Ltd before its 2022 withdrawal estimated nearly 498 million barrels of prospective resources in nearby blocks.

For Guinea-Bissau, Chevron’s presence could mean deeper participation in West Africa’s energy markets and signal a shift toward long-term economic transformation. As exploration begins, the key test will be turning early discoveries into sustainable development that benefits the wider population and strengthens the country’s place in the region’s next wave of energy producers.
