South Africa's cheapest vehicle licence disc renewals

South African motorists must renew their car licence discs on a yearly basis, and according to a MyBroadband research, doing so through the South African Post Office is the most cost-effective nationally available alternative.

PayCity is the lowest choice overall, but it does not have service outside of Cape Town in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, or the Western Cape.

Its R113.85 cost (R99 excl. VAT) similarly applies solely to delivery to a major city. Outside of South Africa’s major and secondary cities, the delivery rate may vary.

MyBroadband analysed the costs of renewing your licence disc at the Post Office, the Natis online site, FNB, Spar, Pick n Pay, and PayCity.

Natis charges the same R72 administrative fee as the SA Post Office. Yet, it is less expensive because the delivery cost is R75.

The services are offered to inhabitants of all provinces in South Africa. It is crucial to remember, however, that the payments do not include the cost of the actual licence disc, which varies depending on the car model.

Natis imposes a delivery fee of R99. Customers can also avoid the delivery price by picking up their new disc from a Post Office office.

License disc renewal is also available at First National Bank (FNB), Spar, and Pick n Pay.

FNB’s service is only offered to motorists in Gauteng or the City of Cape Town, and it has an R199 administration cost. The cost of delivery is included in the pricing.

Spar’s licence disc renewals are the sole service without an internet interface.

Customers must instead visit a supported Spar shop with their expired disc to renew it. Renewals cost R199 at the grocery store, and consumers must pick up their new disc from the same location when it is available.

Spar licence disc renewals are available at certain outlets throughout South Africa’s provinces.

Pick n Pay provides in-store and online licence disc renewals, with an R250 renewal cost and a R79 courier fee. At R329, the service is the most costly in our comparison.

Although still pricey, this is a significant reduction from the R345 launch admin charge and R99 courier fee. Except for the Western Cape, the service is offered in all provinces.
