New EMP201 Integration Removes Re-entry Step for Employers
Sage has introduced a new integration that lets employers submit their monthly Employer Declaration (EMP201) returns straight from its payroll software to the South African Revenue Service. The feature removes the need to extract figures, re-enter them, and file separately on the SARS e-Filing system.
How the integration works
South African businesses must still complete the final payment step on e-Filing. The integration itself handles the declaration of Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE), Unemployment Insurance Fund contributions, Skills Development Levy, and Employment Tax Incentive amounts calculated inside the payroll system.
Until now, the standard process required payroll teams to pull those values from reports, log into e-Filing, and capture the same numbers again. That extra step created duplication and left room for typing errors that can trigger penalties and interest.
What Payroll Teams said about the Pressure
Yolandi Esterhuizen, Global Product Compliance Director at Sage, said the change addresses a practical pressure point. “At its core, this is about trust in financial data and confidence in compliance,” she said. “Payroll professionals operate under constant pressure to deliver absolute accuracy. Sage research shows that 88% of HR and payroll professionals believe accurate and timely payroll processes are a critical driver of employee trust.”
Esterhuizen added that the integration shifts how the work is done. “By removing manual re-entry, we are significantly reducing the risk of human error and changing how compliance is delivered. Compliance should not exist as a separate administrative burden. It should be embedded into the system itself, guided, validated and seamlessly executed.”
Sage’s latest HR and Payroll Leaders’ Report, based on responses from 1,000 professionals across the UK, Ireland and South Africa, found that 71% of respondents said their workload had increased over the past year and 52% reported experiencing burnout. The same research noted that 77% of HR leaders already see technology reducing administrative work.
What it Means for Smaller Employers
For smaller employers that rely on a limited payroll or finance team, the direct link cuts the number of systems and manual actions required each month. It keeps the calculated tax values inside the payroll environment until the moment of submission, rather than requiring a separate export-and-re-key process.
The integration is available inside Sage’s Payroll solutions and does not require a separate accounting system to complete the EMP201 declaration. Employers continue to manage the actual payment through e-Filing once the return has been submitted from the payroll platform.
