eBay has revealed an innovative new feature aimed at fashion enthusiasts: “shop the look,” a generative AI-powered section within its iOS mobile app. This feature suggests a carousel of images and ideas tailored to the customer’s shopping history, providing personalized recommendations that evolve as the user continues to shop. The goal is to introduce complementary fashion items that enhance the customer’s current wardrobe.

Powered by eBay.ai and developed in collaboration with the company’s Responsible AI team and RAI Principles, “shop the look” includes interactive hotspots. When tapped, these hotspots reveal similar items and outfit inspirations, encompassing both pre-owned and luxury items that align with the user’s personal style.

The feature is accessible to any eBay shopper who has viewed at least 10 fashion items within the past 180 days. It will be prominently featured on the eBay homepage and the fashion landing page, providing users with a seamless browsing and discovery experience.

For eBay, this addition represents a unique way to showcase its extensive inventory and potentially drive increased sales. The company plans to explore expansions into other categories over time and will continue enhancing the feature with additional personalization elements throughout the year.

While eBay leads the charge with its AI-driven fashion inspiration feature, it’s not alone in leveraging AI to enhance the fashion shopping experience. Last summer, Google introduced AI-powered virtual try-on features, allowing consumers to virtually test out clothing items. Similarly, Amazon has integrated AI to assist customers in finding clothes that fit well when shopping online. However, eBay’s focus with “shop the look” is on providing fashion inspiration, highlighting the subjective nature of personal style.

Initially available on iOS in the U.S. and U.K., “shop the look” will expand to Android users later this year, offering a broader audience access to its innovative fashion discovery capabilities.
