- Madica, the Flourish Ventures-backed pre-seed programme, has invested up to $200,000 in each of five African startups and brought them into its 18-month support programme of mentorship, coaching and investor access. The cohort is Talenteo (Algeria, HR software for mid-market firms across Francophone Africa), Paysika (Cameroon, digital neobank issuing cards for consumers and SMEs in Central Africa), ChipMango (Nigeria, chip design, engineering training and edge AI), Delta Oil (Egypt, used cooking oil aggregation for renewable fuel feedstock) and Bekia (Egypt, digital platform paying households and businesses for recyclables). The deals take Madica’s portfolio to 18 companies across 10 markets and its 2026 deployment to $1.6 million.
- The SiGMA Africa Startup Pitch, which will award selected early stage African Startups an opportunity to pitch their businesses to venture capital investors, executives and other industry participants in Cape Town, is now open for applications. The African edition of the competition is scheduled to take place in Cape Town on February 17, 2027, where six finalists out of the expected applications will be competing for startup funding.
- Egyptian AI company Synapse Analytics has raised US$13 million in Series A funding to scale its team, accelerate product development and expand international market reach. The startup is now planning further growth after raising US$13 million in a Series A funding round. This brings the startup’s total raised to US$17 million since inception. Synapse Analytics has indicated it will use the new capital to scale its team, accelerate product development and expand international market reach, with the startup having already begun expanding across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and Africa.

Angola's Bank Rate Cut Again As Inflation Continues to Deflate
The central bank of Angola has cut its key lending rate by 100 basis points (bps), to 14.75% from 15.75% yesterday. This was the third consecutive rate reduction, following an inflation number that has reduced to single digits for the first time in over a decade. Inflation dropped to 8.78% year-on-year in August from 9.33% in July. The inflation rate was last in single digits as far back as 2015. The central bank has maintained its year-end inflation forecast at 8.6% but has raised this year's economic growth forecast to 6.15% from a projection of 3.6% it gave in July, citing a stronger performance in both oil and non-oil sectors.
Critical Minerals Task-Force Established in DRC
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has approved a task force to speed up implementation of its strategic minerals partnership with the United States, according to cabinet minutes seen by Reuters yesterday, as Kinshasa seeks to attract more Western investment into its copper and cobalt sectors.The task force is a key step because it gives Kinshasa a dedicated mechanism to convert a high-level minerals pact into actual projects, off-take and Western capital. That matters for diversifying away from China, attracting investment into copper and cobalt, and linking mineral access to security and development outcomes rather than leaving the agreement on paper
Moove Makes August a Major Funding Month in Africa
African startups raised approximately $438m during the month of August, according to TechCabal Insights tracking. This places the month among the top funding months of 2026. One transaction essentially shaped the overall months investment landscape, with Moove’s $250m Series C alone representing around 57% of all capital tracked during the month. Moove sees its business as an infrastructure company for autonomous mobility. This was the largest funding month for African startups since July 2025.
The company has grown from an initial fleet of 76 vehicles focused in Lagos to aproximately 42,000 vehicles, spread across 29 cities in 13 countries. Moove has attained a remarkable annual recurring revenue of around $420m. Its partnership with Waymo has also taken the company into the rapidly expanding autonomous fleet management sector with operations launched or announced for launch in markets including Phoenix, Miami and London.

- Gold futures have lifted above $4,320 an ounce this morning, breaking a two-session decline, as gains in oil prices and bond yields lost momentum ahead of the latest US Federal Reserve policy decision. Oil prices pulled back from multi-month highs after a surprise increase in US crude inventories
Palladium futures have lifted to around $1,320 per ounce today, rebounding from three-week lows as a softer US dollar and short covering supported prices ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision. Palladium gained alongside broader gains across precious metals, with markets pricing a 92.4% chance of at least a 25 basis point rate hike.
- Nigerian LNG producer NLNG aims to start up its $10 billion Train 7 LNG project by the end of 2027, its managing director Adeleye Falade told reporters on the sidelines of the Gastech conference in Bangkok. The project on Bonny Island, which will expand NLNG's capacity to 30 million metric tons per year from 22 million.
- Senegal and Italian oil company Eni have signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct preliminary studies and evaluate the potential of five offshore blocks, the West African country's energy minister announced yesterday. The agreement forms part of Senegal's strategic plan to revive its oil and gas exploration and promote exploration of its sedimentary basin
- India’s BSE Sensex rose about 0.5% to 74,348 on Wednesday, rebounding from a selloff in the previous session as domestic equities found some support, although elevated oil prices, a weaker rupee, and uncertainty ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision kept investors cautious

African General News Briefs:
- According to an AFP report, Clashes erupted in Kinshasa between opposition supporters and pro-government activists during a rally against a proposed constitutional change yesterday. Opposition parties have joined forces in recent months to stand against President Felix Tshisekedi's attempt to change the constitution so he can run for a third term. The "C64" coalition called for a day of nationwide action on Tuesday, and hundreds took to the streets in Kinshasa beneath a forest of flags bearing the colours of the main parties belonging to the movement.
- South African police said on Tuesday they were investigating the deaths of seven women whose bodies were found near Johannesburg over the past two months, with some stripped of their clothes and showing signs of sexual violence. The victims are mostly aged in their 20s or 30s, and one was identified as a woman who disappeared after leaving home for an afternoon run. Police are investigating whether the killings in and around Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, were carried out by a single perpetrator, multiple suspects or copycat criminals.
