The planned link will add capacity for data generated by Conecta Angola's VSAT network, allowing traffic from remote locations to move into Angola's national networks and onward to international internet routes.

Linking Satellite and Submarine Networks

The planned connection will give the Conecta Angola hub access to 2Africa's submarine-cable infrastructure, adding more capacity for data coming from the programme's VSAT network. Traffic collected through satellite terminals can then move from the hub into Angola's domestic networks and onward to international internet routes.

The system uses ANGOSAT-2 for the first leg of the connection. VSAT terminals deployed at different locations send data through the satellite to the Conecta Angola hub, where the 2Africa link provides another route for moving that traffic beyond the satellite network.

Extending Access to Remote Communities

This combination is particularly useful for communities where conventional connectivity infrastructure is difficult or expensive to deploy. Rural areas can face higher costs for connecting local networks to national infrastructure, making satellite-based connectivity an option where fibre or other terrestrial links are not practical.

Angola has already been using ANGOSAT-2 through Conecta Angola to extend internet services to remote communities. The commercial programme launched in December 2025 with a focus on expanding access across the country and creating opportunities for businesses in areas that have limited connectivity.

The new 2Africa connection would give that existing satellite network additional capacity, allowing more traffic to move between remote locations and national and international networks.

Supporting Angola's Digital Expansion

The project forms part of Angola's wider efforts to improve affordable and reliable internet access. The country is also participating in the World Bank-backed Inclusive Digitalization in Eastern and Southern Africa programme, which is expected to reach more than 13 million people.

Building Angola’s Digital Backbone

The programme targets residents and businesses in underserved rural and peri-urban communities, with improved access to affordable and quality internet services among its objectives.

Combining satellite coverage with submarine-cable capacity provides another way to connect communities that remain outside the reach of conventional terrestrial networks. The approach also gives Conecta Angola additional capacity as demand for internet services grows across the country.
