Western Cape gets additional beds for self-isolation

The Western Cape provincial government is making more than 4,000 beds available to those who have no place to quarantine or self-isolate.

But as the province is preparing for its peak, it seems people are reluctant to take up the offer – which comes at no cost.

Western Cape health officials have taken to the streets to speak to communities in high-risk areas in Cape Town and they’re calling on those who have tested positive to make use of government isolation and quarantine facilities.

The Western Cape has completed three field hospitals and a fourth one will be completed soon.

“The one area where we do have pressure is in critical care. We are very pleased that the dexamethasone is being used and that high flow oxygen is being introduced because we can now manage critical care patients outside of the critical care environment,” said the head of the Western Cape Health Department, Dr Keith Cloete.

Currently, there are 1 740 COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the Western Cape with 310 in ICU and high care.
