When it comes to organising and spreading knowledge, AI may do for humanity what the printing press and the internet did for us. It’s a huge step forward in our progress. I never considered AI to be a medium, but consider this description from Dictionary.com: “an intervening substance or agency for transmitting or producing an effect; vehicle.”

Placards, letters, books, webpages, and email are all examples of “intervening substance” in human interactions, and I believe AI will be as well. And, just as businesses learnt and established systems to profit on those mediums, they must now leverage on AI in order to prosper.

AI adoption is increasing significantly faster than prior advancements, and it is now being employed in a wide range of industries, from manufacturing and healthcare to fashion and finance. Companies will either rise or sink swiftly, depending on whether they recognise or disregard this transformation.

It’s Time To Adopt This Medium

Businesses had to adapt and accept the capacity to organise, create, design, and disseminate printed information when the printing press was invented. It is something we take for granted nowadays, but it was a significant shift in the industry. The same thing happened with television and the internet.

Brands that neglected the medium’s adoption were left behind in every scenario. This will undoubtedly occur with AI as well. The recent hype around contextual AI is not a passing trend, and it demands rapid attention from businesses. We’re already advising businesses with thousands of goods whose sales and marketing teams can’t possible remember and promote every detail. We can already build data ingestion engines to modify existing information, such as product specs, and train AI to provide tailored suggestions to purchasers.

Proceeding With Cautious Optimism

I’ve directly deployed code developed using ChatGPT. While it is still in its infancy, AI has saved me a considerable amount of time and money while also enhancing interaction with our deployed tool sets. My reliance on creating specifications, seeking quotations, collecting a budget, and waiting for results vanished overnight as I delivered tested, perfect, scalable, and optimised code for user interaction. I now prioritise the speedy delivery of novel tools over the ability to develop them.

One persistent fear about AI is that it will eliminate employment and lead humanity astray as it approaches the singularity (when AI is more intelligent than humans). This pessimism does not resonate with me. Throughout history, each revolution has provided greater opportunity for progress than the one before it. True, we sacrificed blacksmiths for automotive assembly lines, but those lines gave rise to businesses that no one could have predicted.

According to CompTIA’s 2022 Status of the Tech Workforce study, 8.9 million occupations will be tied to technology in 2022. There is a transition when businesses adapt and incorporate technology into their cultures and tool sets.

To adapt and adopt AI yourself, I recommend researching the following for your industry:

• What internal processes have been too complex to avoid human intervention where contextual AI could be tested or implemented?

• What external experiences could be automated to better serve your prospects and customers, or how could they be assisted by AI to serve themselves?

• How are your industry and competitors investing and innovating in AI?

When it comes to AI, you’re only limited by your imagination. Adapt and adopt this new medium before others do.
