Twitter Inc. has been sued by a consulting business that claims it is owed around $2 million for services related to its lawsuit to compel Elon Musk to finish his takeover of the social media platform.
Charles River Associates filed a lawsuit against Twitter in state court in Boston on Thursday.
The firm stated that it was contracted in August to offer expert economic testimony to counter the witness Musk was likely to call.
However, Musk changed his mind in October and agreed to proceed with his $44 billion acquisition.
Since assuming control of Twitter, the billionaire has cut expenditures. He’s dismissed half the company’s employees and refused to pay rent at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco and other locations across the world.
These restrictions come as Musk prepares to make his first payment on the $12.5 billion debt he incurred to purchase Twitter.
It’s unclear where bills from a business hired by Twitter’s former management to challenge Musk in court rank in Musk’s financial priorities.
In December, Twitter was also sued for neglecting to pay private-jet fees for trips taken by former executives prior to Musk’s takeover.
A message addressed to Twitter’s press email was not responded right away.
The action also comes as Musk faces a securities fraud trial for his August 2018 tweet in which he declared he had secured funds to take Tesla Inc. private — a group of shareholders argues his disclosure shook markets and resulted in millions of dollars in losses for investors.
During the trial, he is anticipated to testify as a witness.
