TikTok CEO Defiant: Asserts Long-Term Presence Despite Bans

TikTok CEO Shou Chew remains steadfast in his belief that the popular video-hosting platform is “here to stay.” He called the recent ban imposed by the US state of Montana “unconstitutional” and expressed confidence that the prohibition would be overturned in court. Furthermore, Chew revealed that TikTok users in the United States have filed a separate legal challenge to the impending ban, which is set to go into effect on January 1st, 2019.

Governments and organizations around the world have been quick to implement bans on the Chinese-owned app, citing concerns that TikTok’s user data may be accessible to the Chinese government. Chew responded to these concerns by emphasizing that his company will never provide user data to the Chinese government. He also stated that the Chinese government has never requested access to American user data and that even if such a request were made, TikTok would refuse to comply. Chew echoed these sentiments during his appearance at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha.

Montana lawmakers recently passed a bill prohibiting the use of TikTok within the state, effectively prohibiting mobile app stores from offering the app for download. Chew, on the other hand, emphasized the app’s massive user base, which boasts over 150 million users in the US and more than a billion worldwide. He emphasized that TikTok provides a unique platform for self-expression and community building, noting that the app is critical to the success of many small businesses in the United States and around the world.

When asked about a potential “Plan B” in the event of a global ban, Chew expressed confidence in engaging in constructive discussions with regulators worldwide. He emphasized that TikTok’s global impact and millions of users make it a valuable platform worthy of careful consideration. Chew believes TikTok is “here to stay,” and he reiterated his commitment to encouraging dialogue and understanding with regulators.

Chew testified in March before a US Congressional committee about TikTok’s alleged ties to the Chinese government and its ability to moderate harmful content. During his appearance, he emphasized TikTok’s opportunity to dispel myths and misconceptions about the platform, which do not apply to mainland China, where the app is not available.

Chew unveiled TikTok’s ambitious “Project Texas” initiative to address data privacy concerns. This $1.5 billion project aims to protect the data of TikTok users in the United States. Chew explained that the project involves establishing a firewall that effectively isolates and protects user data from unauthorized foreign access in collaboration with the Texas-based tech company Oracle. He emphasized that TikTok has gone above and beyond industry standards to ensure the safety of US user data. Chew also revealed that a similar project called “Project Clover” has been running for several months in Europe.

Chew, on the other hand, cautioned that no technology company can guarantee complete protection against all threats. While TikTok has taken significant steps to strengthen data security, there is always the possibility of vulnerabilities. He acknowledged the inherent risks but reaffirmed TikTok’s commitment to constantly improving its data protection measures.
