The momentum around Africa’s role in the global critical minerals value chain intensified this week as industry leaders, government officials, investors, and media professionals gathered at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways for the official media briefing of the upcoming 3rd Annual African Critical Minerals Summit (ACMS), scheduled for August 2025.

Driving the Clean Energy Transition

Held under the theme “The True Value of Africa’s Critical Minerals – Strategic Focus on Value Addition,” the briefing showcased Africa’s increasingly central position in supplying minerals vital to the global clean energy transition, electric vehicle production, and advanced manufacturing.

At the same time, the session was moderated by Nomvula Nhlapo, Head of Marketing and Communications for the Summit, whose leadership set the tone for an urgent and forward-thinking conversation. Notably, as a rising voice in mining communications, Nhlapo emphasized the need to amplify Africa’s narrative in the global minerals market an imperative that was consistently echoed throughout the event.

Strategic Goals Outlined by Summit Director

Subsequently, keynote speaker Tshego Motsoenyane, Summit Director, provided a strategic overview of the Summit’s objectives. These include strengthening collaboration across sectors, promoting local skills development, and unlocking investment potential across Africa’s mineral rich regions. Motsoenyane emphasized that this year’s summit will not just be about mining rather, it will be about reimagining how Africa participates in the global economy through beneficiation, innovation, and sustainability.

Government Endorsement Reinforces Urgency

One of the highlights of the briefing was the playback of remarks by Minister Gwede Mantashe, South Africa’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. In his statement, Mantashe reinforced the government’s support for a Critical Minerals Strategy that prioritizes localized beneficiation and the creation of robust, inclusive mineral value chains.

Moreover, his comments underscored the Summit’s growing influence on continental mineral policy and its critical relevance in shaping Africa’s economic future.

High-Level Participation Expected in August

The 2025 ACMS will gather an influential cross-section of stakeholders, including:

  • Heads of State and Ministers
  • Mining CEOs
  • Investors and Development Agencies
  • Civil Society and Media
  • Technical Experts

This year’s focus areas are as follows:

  • Localized beneficiation and value chain development
  • Youth empowerment and skills training
  • Infrastructure expansion, ESG compliance, and policy harmonization

A Platform for Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

Consequently, these focus areas are seen as essential levers for transforming Africa from a raw material supplier into a global hub for processed mineral products and green technologies. In addition, the Summit will spotlight how critical minerals can serve as a catalyst for inclusive industrialization, bridging Africa’s infrastructure and employment gaps while contributing to climate-resilient growth.Read more here.

Summit Gains Continental Significance

Earlier this year, Minister Mantashe’s national address highlighted the Summit’s rising profile. Clearly, his endorsement affirms the event’s strategic importance in aligning national priorities with continental goals especially as the world races toward a green future. Ultimately, as the African continent prepares to host key players in the global mineral economy this August, the message is clear: Africa must not only supply the minerals of the future it must also share in the prosperity they generate hopefully this summit will not only voice out the key areas of concern but implement practical ideas to improve value chain into action across the mining sector.

China is preparing new traffic rules for a world of self-driving cars

Self-driving cars are getting better at driving themselves. The harder question is what happens when they get something wrong. China is now looking at that problem directly. The country is reviewing changes to its Road Traffic Safety Law that would create specific rules for autonomous vehicles. One of the biggest changes could be who is
