Lipaworld plans to integrate ZARU, a stablecoin pegged to the South African rand, into its business payments platform, giving companies another option for holding and transferring local-currency value through blockchain infrastructure.

The planned integration would make ZARU the first South African rand stablecoin supported by Lipaworld Business. Customers would be able to hold and transfer ZARU alongside global stablecoins such as USD Coin (USDC) and Euro Coin (EURC), and move between the supported digital assets once the integration goes live.

The move would connect rand-denominated digital payments to Lipaworld's international payments infrastructure, targeting businesses that need to manage both local and cross-border transactions.

Connecting Rand Payments to Blockchain Infrastructure

Most widely used stablecoins track the value of the US dollar. While these assets can support international transfers, South African businesses that earn and spend in rand may still need to convert currencies when receiving or making payments.

A rand-pegged stablecoin offers another option by allowing businesses to hold and transfer digital value denominated in their domestic currency. This could reduce unnecessary currency conversions for transactions that begin or end in South Africa.

ZARU and dollar-based stablecoins would serve complementary roles on the platform. Businesses could use ZARU for rand-denominated transactions and access supported international stablecoins when their payments require other currencies.

Business Payments and Potential Applications

Once the integration becomes available, Lipaworld Business customers are expected to be able to hold and transfer ZARU, exchange it for supported global stablecoins and use the platform for business payment activities.

Potential applications include paying suppliers, managing payroll in rand and transferring funds outside conventional banking hours. Blockchain-based settlement can operate around the clock, although the speed and cost of completing a payment will depend on the underlying network and any conversion or withdrawal requirements.

The integration has been announced as a plan. Lipaworld has not provided a confirmed launch date in the information available, so these functions should be treated as intended capabilities rather than services already available to customers.

Lipaworld's Stablecoin Strategy

Jonathan Katende, co-founder and CEO of Lipaworld, said stablecoins are changing how money moves internationally, but local currencies also need a place in that financial infrastructure.

He said the planned ZARU integration would connect the South African rand to Lipaworld's global payments platform and create more practical applications for digital rand payments.

Lipaworld provides financial services for individuals and businesses in emerging markets, including stablecoin wallets, cross-border payments, invoicing, business payments and local payout infrastructure. Its model uses digital assets and payment systems to connect customers in the Global South with international financial services.

ZARU is a South African rand stablecoin designed to provide a digital representation of the local currency for holding and transferring value.

The planned integration would give Lipaworld Business customers another way to manage rand-denominated funds alongside dollar- and euro-linked digital assets. Its practical impact will depend on when the service launches, how businesses can access and convert ZARU, and the costs associated with using it for domestic and international payments.
