South Africa’s National Consumer Commission has confirmed that Volvo Car South Africa is recalling 372 Volvo EX30 electric vehicles sold locally. The recall affects single-motor extended-range and twin-motor performance models from the 2024 to 2026 model years.
Volvo says the action relates to a potential issue with the high-voltage battery, which in rare cases may overheat when charged beyond 70%. In extreme situations, this could lead to a thermal incident and increase the risk of fire. As a precaution, affected owners have been advised to limit charging to a maximum of 70% until a permanent fix, likely involving a software update or hardware repair, is implemented.
A popular EV with a strong local following
Since its launch in South Africa, the EX30 has become one of Volvo’s most successful electric vehicles locally. The compact electric SUV has gained popularity for its punchy performance, clever packaging and strong safety credentials. In 2024, it led local battery-electric vehicle sales, capturing roughly a third of the EV market and earning EV of the Year at the TopGear South Africa Awards.
