Moroccan agritech startup YoLa Fresh has ceased operations after failing to secure the funding needed to continue its business, bringing its attempt to modernise the country’s fresh-produce supply chain to an end less than three years after launch.

Co-founders Larbi Alaoui Belrhiti and Youssef Mamou confirmed the closure on October 8, 2026, saying the company could not raise sufficient capital to continue its development. The founders and shareholders are working with advisers to determine the next steps, although they have not disclosed whether this will involve selling assets or winding down the business completely.

Connecting Farmers to Retailers

YoLa Fresh built a digital platform connecting fruit and vegetable farmers directly with retailers and food-service businesses. The company used data analytics and artificial intelligence to coordinate orders, sourcing and deliveries.

Retailers could place orders by midnight for early-morning delivery, giving them a more organised way to source fresh produce while helping farmers reach buyers.

The business targeted inefficiencies in Morocco’s fresh-food supply chain, where multiple intermediaries and logistical challenges can increase costs and contribute to food losses.

YoLa Fresh appeared to be gaining traction. The company reported working with more than 1,000 local retailers, generating approximately $1 million in monthly gross merchandise volume and maintaining an 85% customer retention rate.

$9 Million Was Not Enough

YoLa Fresh raised $2 million in an initial funding round in March 2023, followed by a $7 million pre-Series A round announced in May 2024. Investors in the later round included Al Mada Ventures, Algebra Ventures, E3 Capital, Janngo Capital and the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO.

Despite this backing and its reported customer activity, the company could not secure the additional financing it needed to continue operating.

The founders have disputed reports that YoLa Fresh received $20 million in investment, saying that figure was inaccurate. The two publicly reported rounds total $9 million.

The company has not disclosed enough financial information to establish why further funding proved unavailable or whether operating costs, working-capital requirements or profitability contributed to its difficulties. The confirmed reason for the shutdown is its inability to secure sufficient financing.

A Challenge for African Agritech

YoLa Fresh had built a network of more than 1,000 retailers and reported monthly gross merchandise volume of about $1 million. Despite that traction, the company could not secure the additional funding it needed to continue operating.

The closure leaves questions about what happened behind the scenes. The founders have not publicly detailed why further financing proved difficult to secure, so it remains unclear what role the company’s operating costs, margins or cash requirements played in its shutdown.

YoLa Fresh’s closure does not mean the market problem it set out to solve has disappeared. Its business connected farmers with retailers and food-service companies through a digital platform, but the company ultimately could not secure the financing needed to continue.

Most businesses begin with market research and an assessment of what is already obvious in the market. For Teboho Kwetepane, entrepreneurship started with a simple observation: some of the resources around him had value, but they were not being processed or presented in ways that could unlock that value.
