Discovery Green: Empowering South African Businesses with Renewable Energy

Discovery, the JSE-listed financial services group, is taking a significant step towards bolstering its support for the public sector through the launch of its ground breaking initiative, Discovery Green. This innovative platform is poised to revolutionize the energy landscape in South Africa, enabling local businesses to access affordable renewable energy generated by independent power producers (IPPs).

The Discovery Green platform operates on a wheeling system, designed to facilitate the establishment of renewable energy facilities, encompassing both wind and solar power plants, and their integration into the national grid. In a country plagued by an ongoing electricity crisis that has stymied economic growth, South African enterprises have been grappling with the adverse effects of power shortages. This year, state-owned power utility Eskom even embarked on a daunting mission of implementing load shedding for a minimum of two years to salvage the grid from impending collapse.

Discovery Green offers a ray of hope for businesses by offering access to renewable energy sources, with a targeted procurement goal of between 400 megawatts and 1 gigawatt of wind and solar power. This initiative opens doors for enterprises to tap into local and international IPPs that have successfully connected to the grid.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Discovery Green is its potential to attract substantial investments, ranging from R20 billion to R25 billion, into South Africa’s energy infrastructure. This financial injection has the capacity to support the establishment of approximately 2,700 solar farms equivalent to the size of 2,700 rugby fields or 200 to 250 wind turbines.

Andre Nepgen, the head of Discovery Green, revealed that the company has been working in collaboration with certain government entities in this venture, although he didn’t specify them. These entities have been instrumental as advisors, lending their support and expertise to the process.

Discovery’s commitment to public sector initiatives is not new; they have previously made significant contributions through projects like Potholes Patrol, which led to the repair of over 175,000 potholes in Johannesburg’s extensive road network. Additionally, they introduced a dedicated fire service in partnership with Advanced EMS, complete with signature blue fire trucks under the umbrella of Fire Ops SA.

The Discovery Green platform offers two distinct products: Green Saver, designed for businesses seeking to maximize their utilization of renewable energy while achieving cost savings, and Green Guarantee, which ensures companies access 100% renewable energy at a more competitive price point.

Discovery intends to initially roll out the platform to medium and large electricity consumers connected to Eskom’s distribution network, with energy supply expected to commence in 2026.

Prominent names in various sectors have already expressed their interest and commitment to this ground breaking initiative. Notable participants include hotel groups like Sun International and Southern Sun, fitness giants Virgin Active and Planet Fitness, healthcare provider Life Healthcare, and the esteemed RMB, serving as the investment banking partner.

When questioned about the sectors being targeted, Andre Nepgen emphasized the platform’s inclusivity, aiming to involve a diverse range of companies. However, Discovery Green remains vigilant about potential industry concentration, ready to apply adjustments if necessary. This innovative venture aligns with Discovery’s overarching goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025, addressing the inherent challenge of renewable energy generation based on natural factors like sunlight and wind, while businesses consume power according to their unique requirements.
