  • Satlyt, a Sunnyvale- and Nairobi-based SpaceTech startup building software that enables satellite operators to process data and run AI onboard spacecraft, has raised $8 million in Seed funding. The funding round was led by Houston-based non sibi ventures, with participation from TLCOM, Antler, Slauson & Co., Launch Africa Ventures, Enza Capital, Askya Investment Partners, Demos, BAG Collective, Gaingels, Asian Investment, and existing backers. The round also marks the first visible move by Askya Investment Partners, the Africa-focused firm founded last year by former Digital Africa chief executive Babacar Seck.
  • Five Nigerian businesses have received a combined €65,000 in pre-seed cheques from the Orange Corners Innovation Fund at a close-out for Cohort 14 at the Netherlands Embassy in Lagos. Twenty entrepreneurs finished the cohort, drawn from about 1,500 applications. Awards were Kiyoko Foods €22,000, Eco Heroes Nigeria €13,000, Leovia Farms €12,000, Teazy Tech €10,000 and Neowel Solutions €8,000. Consul General Frank Keurhost said the programme has backed 280 Nigerian startups and innovative SMEs, of which 67 have generated more than €12 million in cumulative revenue. Orange Corners Nigeria is run by FATE Foundation with the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Formula May Be Heading Back to Africa

A consortium of South African businesses, led former Sibanye-Stillwater executive chairman,Neal Froneman, is planning a R6.7 billion ($402 million) motorsport and property development in the Western Cape to bring Formula One back to the country by 2031. The proposed Blue Mountain Racing project includes a new Formula One-standard circuit, hospitality, entertainment, and property developments on 600 hectares near Cape Town.
The new development is designed to serve broader purposes, including MotoGP events and real estate opportunities, to ensure commercial viability even if Formula One approval is not secured.Although still at the pre-feasibility stage and not yet guaranteed a Formula One race, the initiative could mark South Africa’s first Grand Prix since 1993.


El-Alamein Business Forum Pushes for More Intra-Africa Trade

The inaugural Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt closed over the weekend with more than 20 heads of state and government, plus financial and corporate leaders in attendance. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said the private sector produces more than 70% of African GDP, but about 85% of private-sector transactions are with firms outside the African continent. African Union Commission chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said intra-African trade was $220 billion in 2024, or 14.4% of the continent’s trade while Egypt put its own investments in Africa at about $14 billion. The same meeting produced the security declaration on the Red Sea, Somaliland and the Nile.

Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sola Enikanolaiye told the ministerial roundtable that trade should sit at the centre of African diplomacy. He cited 2026's second-quarter growth of 4.43%, August inflation of 15.39%, reserves of $54.86 billion as of 24 September, and a policy rate of 23%. He said Nigeria-Egypt trade was $223 million in 2025 and called that below potential


Airtel Planned London IPO 

Airtel Money, a mobile payments business operating across Africa, has set a $7 billion valuation for its planned initial public offering  (IPO),on the London stock market. The company, a unit of Airtel Africa, has said it anticipates admission to trading on 14 October 2026. The planned offering is priced at £1.96 per share, which values the business at approximately £5.3 billion, or $7 billion. Existing investors intend to sell 270 million shares at this price, a transaction worth about £529 million. Importantly, Airtel Money itself will not receive any proceeds from the sale of these existing shares.This $7 billion valuation is below earlier market expectations, which had discussed a range of £6 billion to £6.7 billion. Beyond the initial 270 million shares, up to 27 million additional shares could be sold through an option designed to support post-offer trading. 

Breaking Business and Market News Shorts:  

  • Meta’s Muse and the agentic shopping fight. Reporting over the weekend says Meta’s agent Muse builds a page on people in a user’s life, with history and relationship tips. Amazon has blocked Muse from shopping on its platform, a direct clash over who owns the agent-commerce layer.

  • Nigerian stocks ended the week to October 2 lower as investors reduced positions after gains in recent weeks. The NGX All-Share Index fell 0.52% to 250,808.27 points, while equity market capitalisation declined 0.50% to ₦162.843 trillion. Despite the weekly decline, the benchmark remained up 61.17% in 2026.

  • The USA has reaffirmed its commitment to the Lobito corridor development program, and has signed off an agreement with Anzana Electric Group to undertake a feasibility study to develop hydropower generation and upgrade energy distribution networks in the Lualaba Province in the DRC and in the North Western region of Zambia

  • Electricity demand in Kenya has hit a new peak with demand data from June indicating a 2.584.28MW energy usage in June, up 8,5% on June 2025, and the highest demand in more than 5-years. The Energy Regulatory Authority - Epra, has indicated this is the first time demand has exceeded the 2.500 MW level

  • Libya export ban. Economy and Trade Minister Suhail Abu Shiha issued Decision No. 493 of 2026 on Sunday. It bans export of all agricultural products except dates, bans export of locally produced food until the local market stabilises, and bans re-export of imported goods.

Currency markets indicate the US dollar strengthening today after reaching a 17-month high against the Euro yesterday. The Greenback is trading against the Euro at 1.11849  while trading against the Pound at 1.32081. The Yen is currently trading at 158.03 to the US dollar. The rand (ZAR), is currently trading at the 16.73 against the US dollar this morning.

Commodities:  

  • Gold futures  have lost around -0.1% this morning, and currently trading at around $4136.79 per ounce.  
  • Copper prices are up 0.38%  today, with prices currently around $6.5173 per pound
  • Silver futures are up by around 1.1%,  and currently trading at around $61.042 per ounce.
  • Platinum futures are up around 1.36% this morning, and currently trading at $1722.90, While Palladium is down by around -0.13% today, and currently trading around $1171.50 per ounce.
  • Lithium is trading -0.49% lower today, and currently at CNY/T 122 800
  • Brent crude oil prices are trending -0.77% lower today, after a big price spike yesterday, and currently trading around $101.46, with WTI trading at $89.96 currently
  • Cocoa futures are up around 5.2% today, and currently trading at $5670 per ton. 
  • Coffee futures are down around 0.17% today, and currently trading at around $2.8875 per pound

Crypto Currencies: 

  • Bitcoin prices are down around -1.1% today, and trading at around $85 457 per coin currently 
  • Ether prices are down over -1% this morning, and currently trading around $2698.97

African General News Briefs:

  • Persistent violence across Africa is taking a toll on farming, education and development, Burundi’s President told leaders at an African Union meeting in Egypt. Evariste Ndayishimiye was speaking at the Alamein Africa Forum, attended by 20 heads of state and business leaders from across the African continent. "Amid insecurity, no farmer goes to the fields anymore. No child goes to school anymore. No institution plans development for its country. We deplore that violence persists on our continent. In DRC, in Sudan, it is an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” he commented.

  • Cameroon's President Paul Biya authorised a €347.5 million ($390.90 million) loan agreement ​with the World Bank's International Bank ‌for Reconstruction and Development for the Douala-Bangui Economic Corridor project, according to a presidential decree ​issued on the weekend. The financing is to be used to ​support the transport and trade corridor ⁠linking Cameroon's economic capital Douala with ​Bangui, the capital of the Central African ​Republic
