Translate Messages Instantly Within Chats
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to translate messages directly inside the app, aiming to make conversations smoother across different languages. With more than three billion people using WhatsApp worldwide, the update is set to have a significant impact on cross-language communication.
The process is simple. When a user receives a message in an unfamiliar language, they can long-press on the text and select “Translate.” Then WhatsApp will immediately display the message in their preferred language. Users also have the option to save the translation for later, making it easier to keep track of important conversations. The feature works across one-to-one chats, group conversations, and Channel updates, ensuring versatility in different types of interactions.
Automatic Translations for Android Users
Android users are receiving an additional function with this rollout. Instead of translating each message individually, users will be able to enable automatic translations for entire chat threads. Once switched on, all incoming messages in a conversation will appear in the selected language by default. This is particularly useful for ongoing discussions with colleagues, friends, or community groups who communicate in different languages.
Privacy Remains a Priority
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has emphasized that translations take place directly on the user’s device. This ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access or view the content of translated messages. By keeping the process local, the platform upholds its commitment to end-to-end encryption and user privacy, while still introducing new features.
Gradual Rollout Across Platforms
The translation feature is being introduced gradually. On Android, the rollout begins with support for six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meanwhile, iPhone users will gain access to over 19 languages at launch.
Despite the broad coverage, South African languages such as Zulu, Xhosa, and Afrikaans are not yet supported. This may limit the immediate impact for local users, though Meta has indicated that support for more languages is expected in future updates.
By adding built-in translations, WhatsApp is taking steps toward reducing language barriers in global communication.
