Cocoa Futures Slump
Cocoa markets were hit with a price plunge of over -6% this morning after seeing steady gains over the last week. The International Cocoa Organisation (ICCO) estimates global cocoa output will grow by 8% year-on-year to 4.84 million tonnes, driven by an 11% increase in Ivory Coast (1.85 million tonnes) and 13% and 12% increases in Ghana and Ecuador, respectively. These projections suggest a shift from recent crop deficit years to a potential surplus of 142,000 tonnes, easing supply concerns and putting downward pressure on prices. The market is currently inverted with recent short term contracts over the $10000 mark at a higher rate than longer term contracts that are now pricing in the crop surplus for the current season alongside dropping demand.

Standard US Tariff Touted by Trump on Smaller Nations and reduces Indonesian Tariff
US President Donald Trump has said that plans to limit tariffs of just over 10% on smaller countries, including nations in Africa and the Caribbean. “We’ll probably set one tariff for all of them,” Trump told reporters yesterday. He added that it could be “a little over 10% tariff on goods from at least 100 nations.” At the same time, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that the nations with goods being taxed at these rates would be in Africa and the Caribbean—places that generally do relatively modest levels of trade with the US and would be relatively insignificant for addressing Trump’s goals of reducing trade imbalances with the rest of the world.
Trump also announced that Indonesian goods would now face a 19% tariff, down from the 32% he had previously threatened. “As part of the Agreement, Indonesia has committed to purchasing $15 Billion Dollars in US Energy, $4.5 Billion Dollars in American Agricultural Products, and 50 Boeing Jets, many of them 777’s,” he wrote on a social media post.
