In a presentation on Thursday, the State owned power utility Eskom said its transmission company will start operating by the first quarter of the year 2025. In 2019 South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Eskom would be split into three divisions namely, generation, transmission and distribution, which aims to improve management of the company. The government energy committee aims to bring 21GW of additional power online between year 2023 and 2026. Johannesburg has secured bits from private producers to provide 92MW of electricity to help shield the city from nationwide electricity shortages. Last year City Power issued a request for short-term power purchase agreements. Cell C’s largest shareholder Blue Label has warned of a more than 60% decrease in earnings for the end of the year ended 31 May 2023.
