Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema is hopeful that a long-awaited debt restructuring agreement with official creditors will be finalised this week in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

President Hichilema stated during a press conference in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, that “it was agreed that the three of us must stand side by side in the next two days.” You can make your own interpretation of what that means.” This comment indicates a significant development in the debt restructuring negotiations.

President Hichilema has previously stated that a deal could be reached in the near future. Zambia has served as a case study for the Group of 20’s Common Framework for Debt Restructuring, which brings together traditional Paris Club lenders, new creditors such as China, and bondholders. According to Hichilema, a successful agreement with Zambia will pave the way for other countries facing similar challenges.

He went on to say, “The framework we will agree on—hopefully in the next few days—can then be rolled out to assist other countries.” We had to carry the can in order to alleviate the suffering of others.” This demonstrates Zambia’s willingness to take the lead in finding a viable solution that could benefit other debt-burdened countries.

President Hichilema is scheduled to travel to France on Thursday to attend Macron’s two-day Summit for a New Global Financing Pact. Notably, China and France co-chaired Zambia’s official creditor committee, demonstrating their participation and influence in debt restructuring discussions.

The potential debt restructuring agreement is critical for Zambia, which has been burdened with a significant debt load in recent years. Securing an agreement would provide much-needed relief while also putting the country on a more sustainable financial path.

Furthermore, the successful resolution of Zambia’s debt restructuring would serve as an encouraging example for other countries facing similar challenges. The participation of major global players in this process, such as China and France, demonstrates the international community’s commitment to finding collective solutions to debt issues.

As President Hichilema prepares to travel to France for the summit, the anticipation for an announcement on the debt restructuring agreement remains high. The outcome of these negotiations could have far-reaching consequences not only for Zambia, but also for other countries seeking to address their debt problems through international cooperation and coordinated efforts.
