Twitter Blue customers in the United States may now send tweets with up to 4,000 characters. Members were previously restricted to 280 characters per tweet.

The “Blue” membership on Twitter allows paying users to edit tweets within 30 minutes of posting them, upload lengthier and full HD videos, and utilise NFT avatars.

The capability may be handy for Twitter users who prefer not to compose a multi-tweet thread.

“Need more than 280 characters to express yourself? We know that lots of you do… and while we love a good thread, sometimes you just want to Tweet everything all at once,” the company said in a post from its Twitter Blue profile.

“Starting today, if you’re subscribed to Twitter Blue in the US you can create longer Tweets.”

Twitter stated that most regular posting functionalities, such as uploading photos, using hashtags, and generating polls, will remain available.

“But now you can type all the way up to 4,000 characters. For now, longer Tweets on web can’t be saved as drafts or scheduled to send later,” Twitter said.

While only Twitter Blue members may send long Tweets, the firm claims that all users can read, reply to, retweet, and quote them.

Twitter will continue to limit lengthier messages to a 280-character preview in feeds to keep scrolling on the platform to a minimal. To enlarge the post, a “Show more” option will be offered.

After a weeks-long suspension caused by a surge of “protest impersonations,” Twitter debuted Blue in December 2022.

This came after Elon Musk declared that Twitter’s Verified Account badges will be changed.

Previously, account verification was free and based on Twitter’s own internal evaluations of notability; Musk, however, wanted users to pay for the contentious blue checkmark.

As a result, some individuals took use of the functionality to spoof well-known identities.

With the new subscription, the firm stated it will take “a number of other steps to detect and prevent impersonation,” including requiring customers to have a genuine phone number associated to their account.

The monthly membership to Twitter Blue is $7.99 (R142, incl. VAT). It is not accessible in South Africa at the moment.
