The NAACAM 2023 Conference: Unveiling the Future of Automotive Component Factories

The NAACAM Show 2023 conference and exhibition are set to become a pivotal platform where automotive industry visionaries and leaders will gather to shape the future of South Africa’s automotive component manufacturing sector. According to Renai Moothilal, CEO of NAACAM, this event, themed “Component Factories of the Future: Driving SA’s Manufacturing Excellence,” is set to spark discussions that will reshape production strategies and catalyse innovation for the sector’s future.

The conference, which spans two exciting days, is an essential component of the biennial NAACAM Show, a prestigious gathering that attracts both local and international automotive manufacturing experts, professionals, and enthusiasts. This event is dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration within South Africa’s automotive components industry through illuminating conversations and exhibits that vividly depict the depth of the country’s manufacturing prowess, which is a critical pillar of the country’s industrial economy.

Moothilal emphasises the importance of adopting cutting-edge technologies and cultivating a culture of unwavering innovation and collaboration among stakeholders. He believes that this will pave the way for robust growth and sustained vibrancy in the automotive manufacturing sector in the coming years.

A focal point of the conference, led by futurist and trend analyst Dion Chang, will be a dedicated day in which influential stakeholders will dissect the current state of the industry in light of the SA Automotive Masterplan 2035. The goal is to identify opportunities and chart a strategic course for the future. Furthermore, experts will delve into the complex dynamics caused by the transition to mobile electrification. This will include discussions on evolving component prerequisites, market outlooks, raw material requirements, and the profound effects of technology.

A significant emphasis will also be placed on financing and energy considerations, in line with the imperative of meeting carbon emission regulations while maintaining global competitiveness. The role of technological advancements, such as factory automation and digitalization, will be scrutinised in terms of their contributions to growth, competitiveness, workforce upskilling, and the creation of new businesses.

As the first day concludes, attendees can look forward to a live demonstration of LOOP. This innovative matchmaking’ platform, developed in collaboration with NAACAM and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is intended to connect the procurement needs of OEMs and tier-one component suppliers with the capabilities of emerging lower-tier suppliers. This initiative aims to promote localization and improve industry collaboration. The second day of the conference, developed in collaboration with the Gauteng government and automotive-related organisations, will focus on the acceleration of holistic development and growth objectives within the local automotive component landscape.

These discussions will centre on inclusive growth and the empowerment of Black industrialists. In addition, the conference will focus on the burgeoning and rapidly industrialising African regional automotive sector. Strategies for reviving investments, fostering partnerships, and establishing a strong and competitive manufacturing foundation on the continent will be discussed.

As the NAACAM Show conference comes to a close, the Auto Industry Transformation Fund (AITF) and its annual Women in Autos discussion, co-hosted by the Women’s Economic Assembly (WECONA), will be highlighted. This initiative will serve as a platform for championing and enhancing investments aimed at catalysing the transformation of women and youth in the automotive industry.

The South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) will orchestrate a tyre safety activation at the Gerotek testing facility at the end of the NAACAM Show week. It will be an invitation-only event that will include a technical presentation, a panel discussion on road safety, and a live demonstration.
