In a strategic move aimed at ramping up adoption of its advanced driver assistance system, Tesla has announced a significant reduction in the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software subscription. The monthly subscription fee has been slashed from $199 to $99, positioning the electric vehicle giant to attract more customers ahead of its first-quarter earnings.

This price adjustment follows closely on the heels of Tesla’s rollout of a free one-month trial of FSD for all eligible customers in the United States. Notably, Tesla has rebranded the software from “FSD Beta” to “Supervised FSD,” underscoring that the technology does not render Tesla’s fully autonomous and underscores the need for human drivers to supervise the system.

The Supervised FSD software enables Tesla vehicles to perform advanced driving tasks such as lane changes, manoeuvring around obstacles, and following navigation routes, among other functionalities.

Coinciding with the price reduction, Tesla has introduced further enhancements to its latest V12 version of the software, aimed at bolstering FSD’s capability to navigate city streets entirely through neural networks. The increased adoption of FSD not only translates into higher revenue for Tesla but also provides a wealth of video data, instrumental in refining the neural networks and enhancing the overall product.

CEO Elon Musk’s vision for Tesla includes the development of a fully autonomous Tesla robotaxi, slated for unveiling in August. Musk has repeatedly emphasized the pivotal role of self-driving technology in Tesla’s valuation, urging drivers to augment the value of their vehicles by investing in FSD.

Despite Tesla’s stock being likened to that of big tech companies, the company’s margins underscore its fundamental identity as an automaker. The recent price reduction in FSD subscriptions stands in stark contrast to Musk’s previous assertions, suggesting that as FSD edges closer to full self-driving capability, its value would soar, possibly exceeding $100,000.

Notably, Tesla has maintained the one-time purchase cost of FSD at $12,000 in the U.S., although this price has fluctuated over recent years. In 2022, Tesla raised the cost of FSD to $15,000 in North America before reverting to the current price a year later.

While the price cut aims to democratize access to the FSD software, concerns linger over the potential for increased adoption by drivers who may not adequately supervise the system, posing safety risks in case of system malfunctions.

Tesla’s move to make FSD more accessible underscores the company’s commitment to advancing autonomous driving technology and expanding its customer base, albeit at a reduced subscription fee compared to previous projections.

China is preparing new traffic rules for a world of self-driving cars

Self-driving cars are getting better at driving themselves. The harder question is what happens when they get something wrong. China is now looking at that problem directly. The country is reviewing changes to its Road Traffic Safety Law that would create specific rules for autonomous vehicles. One of the biggest changes could be who is
