Having left the SABC under a cloud of controversy, former head of news Phathiswa Magopeni is on the verge of making her return to the public broadcaster.
Magopeni has been included in the list of candidates vying for a position on the SABC board and her inclusion has been confirmed by the Parliament’s subcommittee.
News24 reports that Magopeni is one step closer to making her return to the Auckland Park-based broadcaster.
This comes after her name was included in the list of candidates by Parliament’s subcommittee as it recommended board candidates.
Looking at other candidates included in the list are none other than seasoned journalists such as Renee Horn, Mpho Tsedu, and Professor Frantz Kruger as they form part of the list of 12 that was compiled over two sittings on Thursday.

Magopeni’s inclusion comes after she was axed by the state-owned television and radio broadcaster earlier this year due to allegations of negligence following the airing of an interdicted episode of the investigative journalism programme, Special Assignment.
In an interview back in September this year, Magopeni told the Parliament sub-committee that her sacking from the SABC exposed a culture of flouting due process at the broadcaster.
As a result, the sub-committee interviewed 34 candidates in September with the aim to fill vacancies on the public service broadcaster’s board.
As things stand, the list will be presented to the Portfolio Committee on Communications for consideration and, if adopted, will be then referred to President Cyril Ramaphosa for approval.
Seven of the 12 names picked by the sub-committee were female candidates and experienced newshound and outgoing SABC board member Mary Papayya took to social media platforms and welcomed the list of recommended candidates.

- Rearabetsoe Motaung
- Corporate communications specialist, Dinkwanyane Mohuba
