Johannesburg has secured bits from private producers to provide 92MW of electricity to help shield the city from nationwide electricity shortages.
Last year City Power issued a request for short-term power purchase agreements.
South Africa’s power utility, Eskom has been battling with meeting the demands of providing stable electricity to South Africans.
Thursday City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashsva said the selected companies using waste-to-energy, gas-to-power and solar generation technology provide cheaper electricity than using Eskom.
Eskom said on the website that one megawatt can cover about 650 household, and Johannesburg plans to add 500MW of capacity by 2030.
Johannesburg plans to install rooftop solar at over 700 sites and increase the number of solar water heating systems.
