According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, barely 4% of the township’s companies and people pay for energy.
Joburg City Power announced on Tuesday that it wants to put a stop to the practise of nonpayment among Alexandra companies.

City Power will turn off energy to delinquent companies and households that are unlawfully linked to the electricity system during the next three days.
The revenue collection effort of Joburg City Power will target Spaza stores, salons, pubs, and gas stations in Alexandra township.
According to City Power representative Isaac Mangena, such firms were given adequate notice to clear their debts.
”We are not going to do negotiations today. We are not going to do negotiations tomorrow. We are going to cut off because that is the list that is already there where people have already received pre-termination letters.”
Mangena stated that the City of Joburg cannot provide services if those who can afford to pay do not contribute.
He further stated that they were escorted by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department for safety.
Joburg City Power will today be embarking on a 3-day programme of cutting of electricity for businesses in Alexandra.
