In a surprising turn of events, Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, has stepped down from the board of Bluesky, a social networking service he helped fund and popularize just a year ago. This decision comes in the aftermath of Dorsey’s remorse over Twitter’s sale to Elon Musk and signifies a shift in his focus towards philanthropic ventures.

Making the announcement on the Musk-owned platform, now rebranded as X, Dorsey highlighted his commitment to supporting open internet protocols through philanthropic grants, labelling them as “freedom technology.” He also hinted at the inclusion of X in this category of technology, suggesting that corporations can harness the power of open protocols for innovation.

Dorsey trimmed down the list of people he follows on X to a mere three individuals: Musk himself, renowned whistle-blower Edward Snowden, and Stella Assange, the wife of imprisoned WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange. This gesture hints at a potential reconciliation between Dorsey and Musk, following Dorsey’s previous expression of disappointment over Twitter’s transformation under Musk’s ownership.

Bluesky, the brainchild of Dorsey, was conceived as a network and protocol aiming to embody his vision of Twitter as a decentralized service free from centralized control. Despite its initial hype as an alternative to Twitter post-Musk’s acquisition, Bluesky has been overshadowed by Meta Platforms Inc.’s Threads, emerging as the primary competitor.

Responding to queries on X regarding his involvement with Bluesky, Dorsey unequivocally stated his departure from the board, indicating a shift in his priorities towards other endeavours.
