Ethiopian Airlines has launched a new route to fly between Addis Ababa and Amman, Jordan, and the airline Carrier revealed the news this week.
Based in East Africa, Ethiopian Airlines said starting the route to Amman becomes its 11th city in the Middle East.
Dubbed one of the most profitable airlines in Africa, Ethiopian Airlines sees this route for the first time in over 10 years that the route has been served – but not by Ethiopian.
Until June 2012, the now defunct United Kingdom carrier, BMI, flew London Heathrow-Amman-Addis Ababa and back using A321s.
As per a social media post by Ethiopian Airlines, it isn’t the first time that the carrier planned Jordan service and scheduled flights in July 2019, but they didn’t take off.

“They were due to begin in August 2021, a period ravished by the pandemic, but they didn’t. Finally, at 22:53 on September 19th, Flightradar24 shows that Ethiopian flight ET428 left Africa for Amman,” reports Simple Flying.
“Operated by 4.2-year-old ET-AVM, a 160-seat, two-class B737 MAX 8, the first flight lasted for 3h 19m. Returning, ET429 departed from the Jordanian capital at 04:02 and arrived home at 07:17 after some 3h 15m.”
BusinessTech Africa recently posted that Ethiopian Airlines have reached an agreement with Titan Aircraft Investments to lease three converted Boeing 767-300ERs.
The state-owned airline carrier signed this agreement with an aim to pursue aggressive growth of its freighter fleet with long-term leases of three converted Boeing 767-300ERs from lessor Titan Aircraft Investments.
Flight Global reports that the Addis Ababa-based carrier is expected to receive the first aircraft this month, Titan’s parent company, Atlas Air Worldwide confirmed in a statement on Monday.
The deal is reportedly set to cover the sale-and-leaseback of three Ethiopian Airlines 767 aircraft which are being converted to freighters.
“This dry lease agreement will be fundamental to our fast-growing cargo operation as Ethiopian is a key global player in the air cargo business,” said Mesfin Tasew, the recently appointed CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group.
