South African broadcasters DStv and Openview have announced the launch of “anti-load-shedding” channels that will allow users to catch up on programming missed during a power outage.
The channels — DStv’s SWITCH’D ON and Openview’s Power-UP! — will loop chosen shows, providing viewers with additional opportunities to see primetime programming.
SWITCH’D ON will be accessible on DStv on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, and will feature primetime programming from Mzansi Magic, Mzansi Wethu, and Kyknet & Kie.
“MultiChoice is proud to announce the launch of DStv SWITCH’D ON, an intervention to lessen the frustration of DStv viewers due to the impact of the ongoing load-shedding,” MultiChoice said.
“This intervention will give viewers up to five times to watch their favourite primetime shows when the lights come back on.”
The River, DiepCity, Gqerberha the Empire, Gomora, and Arendsvlei will air on DStv’s SWITCH’D ON pop-up channel.
They will be available to customers of DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Access, and Family. For Access and Family users, the channel will launch an hour and a half later.
The channel is available on channel 109 from 06:00 to midnight for Premium, Compact Plus, and Compact customers.
From 07:30 on channel 110, Family and View members will be able to access the channel.
Openview’s Power-ON! pop-up channel debuted earlier this year with a similar premise: giving fans many chances to watch their shows each day.
“Power-UP! is the new pop-up channel that ensures viewers never miss a show again — no matter how your load-shedding schedule changes,” the eMedia-owned broadcaster said.
Power-UP debuted on Openview channel 114 on Monday, January 23, and airs a weekday loop of E-tv series such as Durban Gen, House of Zwide, Scandal!, and Imbewu.
On weekends, it will also show repeats of Afrikaans dramas such as #DisComplicated, Daai Crazy Somer, and Die Vertoueling.
Every day, Power-UP will open at 6:00 a.m. and close at 12:00 a.m.
