The wait is finally over as the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced the Matric results for the academic year of 2022.
Motshekga’s department hosted the media and provincial MEC’s including the learners in Johannesburg on Thursday evening as she announced the results.
Topping the list is the Free State province which scored an impressive 88.5% pass rate and is followed by KwaZulu-Natal.
Speaking after making her speech and announcement, Motshekga praised the Class of 2022 and that she is pleased with the pass marks this year and to see that no district got less than a 70% pass rate.

She said the total number of matriculants was 932 024, there were 752 003 full-time students enrolled to write the NSC exams and 168 631 part-time students – she added that more students (725 146) wrote in 2022 than in 2021 (703 599).
“I really want to thank the principals, these are the result of principals, and we are grateful. We have an amazing cohort of teachers who are energetic and giving their all, and I want to thank them sincerely,” she said.
“The support staff and the parents…I’m grateful to our communities. They know education is priority number one.”
Motshekga concluded that the class of 2022 where the highest improvement was KZN, which jumped by 6.2 percentage points.
“The class of 2022 has clearly demonstrated… that we can make it,” she added.
“Support and intervention programmes must be implemented. The foundations of learning must be strengthened through the system.
