Charlotte Mampane resigns as National Lottery Commissioner amid claims of corruption

The South African National Lotteries Commission has announced the resignation of Charlotte Mampane who occupied the top position as the commissioner. 

Mampane’s resignation has been confirmed by the NLC through a brief statement issued on social media on Tuesday. 

The board has also announced that it is working round the clock to appoint Mampane’s successor and the processes are currently underway. 

GroundUp reports that Mampane’s resignation has raised questions as the website’s probe revealed that there are irregularities involving the purchase of her house. 

Furthermore, media reports indicated that Mampane’s term was due to conclude at the end of September, however, she opted to step down in the wake of investigations by GroundUp. 

“The Board acknowledges the resignation of Ms. TCC Mampane from her position as Commissioner of the National Lotteries Commission, effective 15 August 2022, and [is] considering the letter of resignation,” it read. 

“The process of the appointment of the new Commissioner is well underway. The Board ensures the efficient and effective operation of the Commission, while processes are underway.” 

Moreover, the publication through its investigative unit, discovered that lottery funding meant to build a Limpopo school damaged by fire was used to pay for her house in a luxury estate near Hartbeespoort. 

In its probe, the publication suggests that its investigation unit found that this was one of several such houses bought with lottery funds.
