Cape Town will hold its largest electricity tender This week

This week, the City of Cape Town will invite bids for its largest power purchase deal of 500MW. To mitigate the impact of load shedding in Cape Town, the City is looking into shorter contracts with private power producers.

According to News24, the next contract is part of a three-phase procurement procedure for load shedding protection.

“We are confident that Cape Town will be the first metro to break free from Eskom, and in doing so, enable meaningful economic growth and investment that helps more people into work over time. The City is on track to offer protection from the first four stages of Eskom’s load-shedding within the next three years,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The City of Cape Town announced a 200MW renewables procurement in February of last year. This week’s tender is one of several that will be released in the coming months.
