Headline News Today

African Economic Growth to Outstrip China

The International Monetary Fund has stated that African economies are set to grow faster than China for the first time in decades. At its annual meetings, the IMF projected sub-Saharan Africa to expand 4.5% in 2026, a 0.1 percentage point above China’s forecast.

Several countries including Ethiopia, Guinea, Rwanda and Côte d’Ivoire are projected to grow at or above 6%. The IMF noted that African economies managed the Iran war’s effects on fuel and fertiliser better than many expected. China faces slower growth from an ageing population and limits on its export model.

MNT-Halan shares Raise $150 Million on Egyptian Exchange Debut

Egypt’s largest fintech by loan book and customer base began trading on the Egyptian Exchange yesterday. The parent group sold 320 million existing shares (20% of the Egyptian operating company) at EGP 24.50, raising roughly EGP 7.84 billion (~$150 million). Demand was heavy and the private tranche was 11.2 times over subscribed, with the retail tranche 43.6 times oversubscribed, drawing more than 41,500 orders and total demand of about EGP 126 billion.

Shares opened at the offer price and closed higher—reports range from 6.6% to as much as 18%—valuing the listed Egyptian business at roughly $745 million. The offering was structured as a secondary sale; the parent company has indicated it will reinvest part of the proceeds into the Egyptian operations. EFG Hermes and Citi acted as joint global coordinators. The debut is the largest Egyptian IPO in dollar terms since 2021 and the biggest by a private company in a decade

African Company Bonds See big Uptick in 2026

African companies raised $13.3 billion in hard-currency bonds in the first nine months of 2026. This is the strongest pace of bond raises in five years, according to Bank of America. The figure includes $3.25 billion in private placements. Bank of America managing director Kay Hope wrote in a note on 19 October that issuance is running second only to the $17 billion raised in 2021.

Eleven African countries are represented this year, up from eight in 2021. Issuers include First Quantum Minerals, Azule Energy and Sasol. Rating upgrades have outnumbered downgrades, and importantly, the segment has recorded no defaults since 2020.

  • PKF Johannesburg’s industry report, released  last night (20 October 2026) has warned that failure to accelerate localisation, secure future vehicle production and address infrastructure constraints could put thousands of jobs and billions in exports at risk. South Africa has a significant opportunity to strengthen its position as Africa’s leading automotive manufacturing hub but failure to respond decisively to shifting global market dynamics could place one of the country’s most important industrial sectors on a path of declining exports and gradual deindustrialisation.
