Business Headline News Today

African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) Extended to December 2028.

AGOA lapsed on 30 September 2025 without renewal, and was restored retroactively in February 2026 only to 31 December 2026. Yesterday saw Us president Trump sign-off the Continuing resolution that was passed by the US Senate on 8 August. The extension sits inside the short-term funding bill (H.R. 6500 / Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act), not as a standalone AGOA reform act. What this means for Africa, is that for now Sub Saharan African States will still have preferential trade with the USA AGOA allows for duty-free access for qualifying goods from eligible sub-Saharan countries, not a blanket zero tariff on all African exports. Zero tariffs are charged on agricultural goods, apparel and textiles (with extra rules), footwear, some manufactured goods, vehicles and parts for some beneficiaries, minerals and processed products.

VW Cutting 50 000 Jobs Globally

Volkswagen’s supervisory board has signed off a group turnaround programme that includes cutting another 50,000 jobs as tariffs, overcapacity and Chinese EV competition squeeze Europe’s largest carmaker. The plan is meant to lower costs while the company retools plants and product cycles for electric and software-defined vehicles. The cut is industrial-scale even by VW standards and will hit German works-council politics as well as supplier towns. For South Africa and other VW production hubs the risk is a slower order book and tighter capex, not an immediate plant closure announcement.

Platinum futures traded above $1,800 an ounce after climbing from a two-week low, as a weaker US dollar boosted demand for precious metals. Platinum’s industrial demand is expected to grow by 9% this year to 2.24 million ounces, according to the World Platinum Investment Council. Valterra Platinum has highlighted China’s rapidly expanding hydrogen-truck sector as a potential new demand catalyst, estimating around 6 million ounces of additional global demand if hydrogen trucks reach a 20% share of the global fleet.
China has moved hydrogen trucks from demo-phase to early commercial output, with thousands of vehicles working, and low-thousands sold per year. Tens of thousands of FCEVs exist in the wider transport fleet in China, and factory capacity is being scaled in the 3,000–10,000 unit per year range. It is the biggest hydrogen-truck industry on earth, however It is not yet a large industry.
