More than 30 bank locations are now available for South Africans to renew their passports or apply for a smart ID card.

However, there are significant inconsistencies between the DHA’s roster and the branches listed on its online booking platform.

The DHA-supported bank locations listed on the eHome Affairs platform can handle such applications, however some are simply the appropriate bank’s offices rather than real branches.

The eHome Affairs portal, for example, identifies Absa Towers and Nedbank Lakeview as DHA-supported banks but excludes some of the DHA-listed branches, such as Standard Bank’s Mitchell’s Plain branch.

MyBroadband spoke with the DHA about the inconsistencies between the two listings, but it had not answered by the time of publishing.

The DHA announced plans to expand its passport renewal and smart ID services to 43 more bank locations in November 2022.

“Currently, there are 27 bank branches which are operational and available to services clients requiring DHA services,” it said.

“The department envisages to roll out to a further 43 sites once the partnership agreements are signed.”

The Standard Bank branch in Kathu Mall is one illustration of its growth. The site is currently under testing and only accepts walk-ins.

The Kathu Mall location is the Northern Cape’s first DHA-supported bank branch.

Standard Bank has the most DHA-affiliated branches. The following is a breakdown of the number of Home Affairs branches:

  • Standard Bank — 9
  • FNB — 8
  • Nedbank — 7
  • Absa — 6
  • Discovery — 1
  • Investec — 1

It should be noted that, while Discovery Bank is listed for reservations on the eHome Affairs portal, it is not on the department’s official list.

MyBroadband earlier reported that the services are accessible at the bank’s flagship headquarters in Sandton.

Customers must still register on the eHome Affairs portal to book with Discovery Bank.

However, after completing the online application, consumers must email a desired timeslot to DB DHA appointment@discovery.bank.

The table below lists the bank branches where South Africans can make appointments to renew their passports and apply for a smart ID card.
