ARM’s more energy efficient smelting technology, known as SmeltDirect, may soon Transform South Africa’s ferroalloy industry. Developed by African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), this innovative technology reduces electricity consumption by over 70% and carbon emissions by approximately 60%, giving industry users an advantage in terms of production cost, Additionally this breakthrough has the potential to re-industrialize South Africa and enable the country to regain its position as a leading producer of ferroalloys and green steel.

SmeltDirect requires only 1.2 MW of electricity to produce a ton of alloy, compared to the 4 MW needed by conventional systems. This significant reduction in energy consumption not only decreases costs but also minimizes the industry’s environmental impact. According to ARM Ferrous CE Andre Joubert, SmeltDirect has attracted global attention and is now ready for commercialization and process parameter Integration in the industry.

Revitalizing South Africa’s Ferroalloy Industry

South Africa was once a global leader in the ferrochrome and ferromanganese markets, but rising electricity costs have forced widespread smelter closures, causing a sharp decline in the industry. SmeltDirect presents a viable solution to this challenge, helping the nation restore its market position while generating employment. On average, the production of 200,000 tons of alloy per year through SmeltDirect supports the creation of about 700 jobs.

Commercialization and Partnerships

ARM is engaging with various partners, including the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa and international parties, to commercialize SmeltDirect. The company is also in discussions with major steel producers to explore the technology’s application in producing green steel. While progress is being made, Joubert emphasizes the need for cooperation from both industry and government to reinvigorate industrialization and smelting in South Africa.

Joubert also cautioned that reviving South Africa’s smelting sector will demand significant effort, especially given the ongoing shutdowns of chrome operations due to high electricity costs. The recent closure of Glencore’s South African facilities, which threatens thousands of jobs, underlines the challenges ahead.

Solar Power and Renewable Energy

ARM is also exploring the use of solar power to reduce its carbon footprint. Initially, the company built its own solar plant, but due to uncertainty surrounding legislation and Eskom’s tariff structure, ARM has decided to purchase solar power from independent power producers (IPPs) instead. This approach allows the company to save on electricity costs and reduce carbon emissions while awaiting clarity on future legislation and tariffs.
