Anglo American, a prominent mining conglomerate, has generously donated one of its buildings in Johannesburg’s central business district (CBD) to the Maharishi Invincibility Institute, a non-profit education organisation, in a remarkable gesture towards improving educational opportunities. The institute will receive the expansive 45 Main Street building, which spans over 40,000 square metres, as part of its philanthropic act, furthering its mission to provide quality education to underprivileged youth.
This is the second time Anglo American has made a substantial donation to the Maharishi Invincibility Institute. The institute’s campus is currently housed in the first building, which is located on Ntemi Piliso Street just outside the precinct. The official handover of the 45 Main Street building occurred on a historic occasion, demonstrating Anglo American’s commitment to revitalising Johannesburg’s once-thriving CBD – a historic hub of economic activity in South Africa.
Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad emphasises the importance of Anglo American’s investment in education for the future: “Anglo American’s Johannesburg CBD campus is a testament to the past, but it is a beacon of hope for the future.” Preserving the historic campus and others like it is more than a nostalgic exercise; it is a commitment to the well-being and future of future generations.”
The donation of the 45 Main Street building means that the Maharishi Invincibility Institute’s student capacity has increased significantly. The institute currently has slightly more than 1,000 students, but with this generous contribution, their capacity will be increased by at least 3,000 students. This increase is consistent with the institute’s mission of empowering underprivileged youth through education.
Dr Taddy Blecher, CEO of the Maharishi Invincibility Institute, expresses deep gratitude for Anglo American’s visionary support: “Through the donation of 45 Main Street, the Institute will continue to further its mission of developing a new generation of competent leaders right here in Johannesburg’s inner-city.” We want to play a more active role in making the inner-city a more appealing and safer place to live, work, and thrive by establishing ourselves in the CBD.”
Surprisingly, this charitable endeavour comes as Anglo American prepares to relocate its operations from downtown Johannesburg to Rosebank in 2021. Despite the fact that the company’s primary operations have shifted, Anton Uys, the group’s corporate services manager, emphasises the company’s continued interest in the CBD area. He emphasises that Anglo American owns five buildings in the precinct and that plans for the remaining structures are in the works, indicating a continued investment in the area’s development.
The Anglo American-led initiative extends beyond education. Collaborating with stakeholders like Nando’s, Wits University, Standard Bank, Investec, and the Maharishi Institute, the Johannesburg CBD Coalition strives to rejuvenate the inner city. Nolitha Fakude, chair of Anglo American’s management board, affirms that empowering the city’s youth is central to this urban renewal endeavor: “We firmly believe that Johannesburg’s inner-city regeneration hinges on nurturing the potential of its young people, who represent the city’s future.”
The formation of the Johannesburg CBD Coalition symbolizes a united front dedicated to city transformation. The coalition serves as a dynamic platform for various organizations to amalgamate their expertise, resources, and insights, thereby crafting a comprehensive blueprint for the city’s rejuvenation. Anglo American’s commitment to education and urban renewal resonates as a beacon of hope, transcending its role as a mining corporation to contribute significantly to society’s betterment.
