Paratus has made history with its first private mobile network in Namibia, powered by 4G/LTE and 5G technologies. The landmark coincides with Paratus Namibia’s 20th anniversary and signals the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s digital inclusion and expansion.
For two decades, Paratus Namibia has been the group’s cornerstone, driving innovation and expansion not only within the country but also across Africa. The company has built one of the continent’s most extensive fibre networks and satellite infrastructure, pioneered the landing of the Equiano subsea cable, and developed tier 3 by design data centres. Its expertise has consistently put Namibia at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution. The launch of a private mobile network demonstrates Paratus’ commitment to challenge the dominance of state-owned operators and offer customers affordable, transparent, and high-quality connectivity options.
Investing in Africa’s Digital Future
Paratus has invested heavily in infrastructure to create a solid foundation for growth. Since 2018, the company has invested over N$1.42 billion into network infrastructure. Of this, one third was used to build a modern digital technology stack, developed in partnership with Cerillion and Nokia. This integrated platform eliminates outdated systems, delivering a seamless, fully digital customer experience.
Paratus Group CEO Schalk Erasmus emphasized the strategic vision behind the investment:
“Connectivity is the backbone of economic growth. Launching Namibia’s first private mobile network is a deliberate step in our mission to transform Africa’s digital landscape. By offering transparent, affordable services, we’re removing barriers and empowering more people to participate in the digital economy.”
Customer-Centric Connectivity
The new Paratus mobile network delivers competitively priced data and voice packages, ensuring quality. Services such as Voice over LTE (VoLTE), Wi-Fi calling, and rapid digital activation set new standards in Namibia. Customers can now enjoy a complete ecosystem of connectivity that integrates LTE and 5G mobile services with fibre, Sky-Fi wireless connections, and tailored solutions for homes, businesses, and enterprises.
Erasmus noted that the launch represents more than just a new product
“This is about challenging the status quo and giving customers the freedom, control, and confidence they deserve. Our Namibian team has worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.”
A Pan-African Vision
Paratus is not only transforming Namibia but is also changing connectivity norms across Africa. With operations in 15 countries, it runs Africa’s only fully contiguous quality network. Its East-West Connect route spans the continent coast to coast, while the Paratus Express Route, powered by Equiano, offers the fastest, most reliable low-latency link from Johannesburg to Europe and the US.
In addition to terrestrial networks, Paratus extends satellite connectivity-focused services to over 30 African countries. Its global footprint also includes international points of presence in Europe, the UK, and the US, ensuring seamless cross-border communication.
Founded in Africa, Paratus employs over 1,100 people and is driven by a vision to deliver Africa’s quality network. The company is committed to sustainable growth, community empowerment, and digital inclusivity. As it celebrates 20 years in Namibia, Paratus remains dedicated to raising the bar for connectivity across Africa and beyond.
