Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader in electrification and sustainable power solutions, has partnered with AngloGold Ashanti to deliver a groundbreaking project at Tanzania’s Geita Gold Mine. The initiative connects the mine to the national electricity grid, significantly reducing diesel dependency, cutting costs, and lowering carbon emissions.
Connecting to a Cleaner Grid
AngloGold Ashanti’s Geita Gold Mine, one of Tanzania’s largest gold producers, is now securely linked to the national grid through Hitachi Energy’s advanced power quality solution. Tanzania’s grid comprises 45.5 percent renewable energy, enabling the mine to tap into cleaner sources of electricity while reducing its reliance on diesel generators.
The transition has had an immediate environmental impact. By replacing 80 percent of the fossil-fuel gensets previously used at the mine, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by at least 50 kilotons of carbon emissions annually. This symbolizes significant progress in the mine’s decarbonization journey, while also lowering operating costs by minimizing diesel fuel expenses.
Connecting to a Cleaner Grid
At the core of the project is Hitachi Energy’s PCS 6000 STATCOM system, the first of its kind to be deployed in Africa. This state-of-the-art power electronic converter stabilizes the mine’s connection to the grid, ensuring reliable performance in an environment where power stability is critical to operations.
The system’s efficiency is further enhanced by MicroSCADA, Hitachi Energy’s advanced digital monitoring platform. This technology provides real-time supervision, control, and data insights, allowing operators to manage energy flows with precision and resilience.
Collaboration for Long-Term Success
The project was delivered through a collaborative effort involving AngloGold Ashanti, the government of Tanzania, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), and Hitachi Energy. Together, these partners ensured the project was executed to international standards while building local capacity.
Hitachi Energy also invested in training and supervising local contractors, strengthening skills within Tanzania’s energy sector. This knowledge transfer not only supported the project’s immediate success but also contributed to long-term community upliftment and sustainable development.
“We are proud to support Geita Gold Mine Limited in this landmark achievement,” said Mohamed Hosseiny, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy in Africa. “AngloGold Ashanti’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and climate resilience across their business, value chain, and communities sets a remarkable standard in the industry. It is reassuring that our pioneering technologies and solutions are advancing a sustainable energy future for all.”
A Model for Industrial Decarbonization
The PCS 6000 STATCOM system, pre-assembled and tested before shipment, was designed for fast installation and adaptability to the challenging mining environment. Its compact, containerized design makes it a scalable solution for other industrial and remote grid applications across Africa.
Electrification technologies such as STATCOM are playing a critical role in driving the global energy transition. And by delivering stable, innovative grid solutions, Hitachi Energy is enabling industries to cut emissions while maintaining reliable, secure, and efficient power supply. Read like this more here
