South African minister of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza has opted against the extension of the national ban on the movement of cattle.  The ban was introduced three weeks ago to curb the spread of foot-and-mouth disease, which is among the world’s most infectious animal illnesses.   News24 reports, however, that there were exceptions, including if there is a veterinary permit for direct slaughter at registered abattoirs and for slaughter for ritual purposes.  While some agriculture bodies accepted the ban on the cattle movement, they also voiced out that the government should have acted sooner when the cases were…

The South African citrus industry is said to be voluntarily doing without exporting its last harvest of Valencia oranges from Citrus Black Spots affected areas to European Union countries. According to the Citrus Growers Association, the decision will come into effect as of next week starting on Friday. The price of both 93 and 95 unleaded petrol will be lowered by R2.04 a litre on Wednesday, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced on Monday. This will lower the price of 95 petrol in Gauteng to R23.38 a litre, from a record high of R26.74 in July. That said, petrol cost only R19.61 at the start of the year. Diesel will be reduced by between 46.34 c a litre and 56.34c a litre.
