Namibia’s rapidly emerging oil and gas sector is placing young people at the heart of its future through a series of initiatives planned for the upcoming Namibia Oil & Gas Conference (NOGC) 2025, scheduled for 12–15 August in Windhoek. As global interest in Namibia’s offshore discoveries continues to grow, the spotlight is now turning inward to the youth who will be tasked with driving the industry forward sustainably and inclusively.
Future Generations Masterclass to Empower Young Professionals
A key highlight of the 2025 edition of the conference is the introduction of the Future Generations Masterclass, a half-day programme designed in collaboration with the Namibia Youth Energy Forum (NYEF). The initiative is a bold step towards bridging the gap between Namibia’s young workforce and the sophisticated demands of the energy sector.
The masterclass aims to equip students, graduates, and early-career professionals with the insights, skills, and inspiration they need to enter and thrive in the oil and gas space. It will feature two core sessions: the first focusing on leadership development, mentorship, and navigating real-world challenges in the energy industry the second bringing together experienced professionals to share personal stories, failures, and lessons from the field.
Building Local Capacity for a National Energy Future
This strategic focus on youth is not symbolic it is essential. As Namibia transitions into a new energy era, the country faces an urgent need for skilled, local professionals who understand the technological, regulatory, and environmental dimensions of modern oil and gas operations. According to Jason Kasuto, Chairperson of the Economic Association of Namibia, the youth must not only be included but actively shaped into leaders and problem-solvers who can define the nation’s energy destiny.
Youth in Oil & Gas Summit Adds Momentum to Engagement
Complementing the NOGC’s youth agenda is another major event: the Youth in Oil & Gas Summit (YIOGS) 2025, taking place from 25–26 July in Walvis Bay. Organized by the Youth in Oil & Gas Foundation and endorsed by the African Energy Chamber, this summit is a national platform where young Namibians can engage directly with industry leaders, policymakers, and investors. Under the theme “Drilling into the Future” the summit will feature keynote addresses, masterclasses, panel discussions, and mentoring sessions.
Strong Institutional Support for Youth-Led Development
Both events have received strong institutional backing, including from PETROFUND, Namibia’s national fund dedicated to capacity building in the petroleum sector. This endorsement not only ensures credibility but also opens up access to training opportunities, bursaries, and internships for young participants.
With the development of Namibia’s oil fields still in the early stages, these youth-focused events signal a proactive approach to building a home grown talent pipeline. Instead of relying heavily on foreign expertise, Namibia is preparing its youth to take ownership of a sector that could redefine its economic landscape.
