Telecel Zimbabwe, the country’s third-largest mobile operator, has successfully completed corporate rescue proceedings, a legal mechanism that will enable the financially distressed company to continue operations under judicial protection. This comes after years of commercial and technological decline, which had severely weakened the company’s financial position and its ability to meet obligations to creditors.
The corporate rescue process will allow Telecel to restructure its debt, stabilize operations, and explore opportunities for attracting new investors. As part of this process, the company plans to implement a continuity plan designed to restore its competitiveness in a market largely dominated by Econet and NetOne.
Technical Weakness Had Limited Competitiveness
Prior to the rescue, Telecel’s limited infrastructure, including a 4G network with just 17 LTE base stations, significantly hindered its ability to compete. These limitations have contributed to a shrinking subscriber base and a persistent loss of market share.
