Vodacom Eastern Cape has intensified its efforts to promote digital inclusion and improve public safety through targeted network upgrades in the Addo region and along the R335 route, which connects Nelson Mandela Bay to KwaNojoli (Somerset East).
Tackling Crime Through Better Connectivity
A troubling surge in truck hijackings on Addo Road in Motherwell prompted Vodacom to upgrade its network infrastructure. After the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber raised concerns, the company quickly assessed weak signal points along this high-risk corridor.
Consistently poor mobile reception left victims and witnesses unable to call for help during emergencies, turning signal issues into a serious public safety hazard. Businesses that rely on vehicle tracking systems faced frequent disruptions due to unreliable data transmission, putting both drivers and cargo at greater risk.
Infrastructure Upgrades Deliver Measurable Results
In response, Vodacom completed major upgrades at 11 base station sites in Addo, within the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, and along the R335. These improvements increased mobile coverage by 10% and boosted network capacity by 15% across the region.
Key locations such as the Addo central business district, the local police station, nearby farms, and the newly established Addo Spar centre now enjoy stronger signal strength. Residents, farmers, and commuters can count on reliable communication when it matters most.
“With stronger mobile networks, communities become better equipped to prevent and respond to crime, and local businesses gain more reliable access to digital tools and markets,” said Zakhele Jiyane, Managing Executive of Vodacom Eastern Cape. “For farmers, families, truck drivers, and police officers in the Addo area, our infrastructure upgrades have enhanced communication, security, livelihoods, and peace of mind.”
More Enhancements on the Horizon
Vodacom Eastern Cape continues to support the Addo community. Over the next six months, the company will deploy high-power signal boosters to eliminate the remaining blind spots along the R335.
The rollout of new base stations will also extend full coverage across Addo’s town centre and surrounding areas. These expansions aim to improve access to emergency services and reduce digital exclusion in underserved communities.
A Broader Vision for the Eastern Cape
These targeted initiatives form part of the Company’s Eastern Cape’s broader strategy to modernise its network and promote digital inclusion. In the past financial year alone, Vodacom invested more than R500 million into network development, broadband expansion, and renewable energy projects particularly in rural and township areas.
“As South Africa continues its digital journey, our targeted investments show that when technology is deployed with purpose, it becomes a force for good,” Jiyane added. “We are proud to help solve pressing social challenges, build stronger and safer communities, and empower individuals and businesses through the power of connectivity ensuring no one is left behind.”
