MTN Rwandacell PLC (MTN Rwanda) has introduced the country’s first paper-based biodegradable SIM cards, in order to show its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable business practices. This innovative step complements MTN Rwanda’s existing eSIM offerings, and this is a great move towards reducing plastic waste.
Every year, 430 million tonnes of plastics are produced globally, with approximately 2,000 garbage trucks worth of plastic waste ending up in oceans, rivers, and lakes daily. This pervasive plastic pollution poses a severe threat to ecosystems, diminishing their resilience to climate change. In 2020 alone, the telecom industry produced 4.5 billion plastic SIM cards, contributing 2% to global emissions.
Aligned with the MTN Group Environmental Strategy, MTN Rwanda is transitioning to paper SIM cards and optimizing packaging to support Rwanda’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy. These new paper SIM cards, known as “bioSIM,” are made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified materials, ensuring responsible forest management. The biodegradable nature of these cards marks a significant shift from traditional plastic SIM cards, underscoring MTN Rwanda’s commitment to environmental protection.
As a company with deep roots in Africa, MTN Rwanda is acutely aware of the environmental challenges facing the planet. The introduction of paper-based biodegradable SIM cards is a testament to MTN’s dedication to being part of the solution.
Enzo Scarcella, Executive Consumer Officer of MTN Group, also emphasizes MTN’s unwavering dedication to leading digital solutions for Rwanda’s development while integrating sustainable practices into its operations. The launch of these biodegradable SIM cards is one of several initiatives MTN is undertaking to achieve its sustainability goals.
