Apple is preparing a redesigned Siri for release later this year. The assistant will run on Google’s Gemini models under a new multi-year agreement. The move gives Apple access to a proven AI system at scale. It also gives Google a stronger presence inside Apple’s ecosystem, where Siri remains a key tool for daily tasks.
Google said Apple selected its AI technology after internal evaluation. The company believes Gemini offers the strongest foundation for Apple’s foundation-model work. Google also indicated Gemini will support more than Siri. Its models are expected to power additional Apple Intelligence features in future releases.
How OpenAI Fits into Apple’s AI Setup
The Gemini partnership does not remove OpenAI from Apple devices. Apple introduced ChatGPT integration in late 2024. This allows Siri to route complex questions to the chatbot when users choose to use it. Apple previously said there would be no major changes to that setup. OpenAI has not publicly commented on the latest agreement.
What changes is the structure behind the assistant experience. Gemini becomes the default intelligence layer. ChatGPT remains available for advanced, opt-in queries.
What the Deal Means for Google
Google had reportedly been competing with OpenAI for deeper integration with Apple. While financial terms were not disclosed, the result gives Gemini access to one of the world’s largest consumer device platforms. Apple has more than two billion active devices in circulation. That gives Google a major expansion channel beyond Android.
The deal has also drawn criticism around market influence. Tesla CEO Elon Musk argued that giving Google a larger role inside Apple devices concentrates too much control in one company. He pointed to Google’s reach through Android and Chrome. Musk’s comments come as his own AI firm, xAI, invests heavily in model development and infrastructure to compete with leading players.
Why Apple Chose This Route
Apple enters this partnership after a difficult stretch in its AI rollout. Siri’s upgrade has faced delays. Senior executive changes have taken place. Early generative AI tools have received mixed reactions. Using Gemini gives Apple a faster path to improved assistant performance. It also gives the company more time to develop its broader Apple Intelligence plans.
The agreement builds on a long standing commercial relationship between the two firms. Google remains the default search engine on Apple devices. The arrangement drives significant traffic for Google. It also generates tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue for Apple. Adding Gemini into Siri extends that partnership into the AI layer.
Market Reaction and Privacy Notes
Alphabet’s market valuation moved above $4 trillion on Monday following news of the agreement. Even so, privacy will remain a key topic as Siri becomes more AI-driven. Google said Apple Intelligence will continue operating on-device and through Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple’s privacy standards, a statement aimed at easing concerns about how user data is handled within the updated assistant experience.
