Google has announced a significant increase in the monthly subscription fee for its 100GB Google Drive storage plan in Nigeria, raising the cost from ₦950 (R11,82) to ₦1,900 (R23,63). This price adjustment will come into effect on March 28, 2025.
In a notification sent to its customers, Google informed them: “The price will automatically increase to ₦1,900/month on March 28, 2025, for your Google One subscription. Cancel at any time in Google Play.”
The move is part of a broader price hike across select countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, and the United Republic of Tanzania, with the first wave of increases rolling out on February 18, 2025.
Google One provides cloud storage for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. The updated pricing, which doubles the current rate, comes at a time when digital storage solutions are more critical than ever for personal and professional use. As users increasingly rely on Google Drive to store documents, photos, and files, many may need to reassess their storage requirements and adjust their budgets to accommodate the higher costs.
Though Google has not disclosed the exact reasons behind the price hike, factors like rising operational expenses and currency exchange rate fluctuations are likely contributing elements. The price increase also aligns with the broader trend of rising costs in Nigeria, where businesses are adjusting prices due to inflationary pressures.
This price adjustment follows other recent increases in Nigeria. Earlier in January 2025, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff hike for telecom operators, including industry giants MTN and Airtel. In addition, pay-TV provider Multichoice raised the prices of DSTV and GOtv plans by up to 21%.
Nigerian users are encouraged to review their current Google Drive usage and make adjustments to their storage plans ahead of the price change scheduled for March 28, 2025.
